Brora Beach
Brora beach, is a stunning stretch of sand that reaches for miles and miles along the east coast. Start at the mouth of river Brora, keep an eye out for seals, and walk alongside the waves. Take a dip, take photographs, take a break on the rocks while looking out for dolphins. Warm up by heading to Brora Golf Club and enjoy a lovely, homemade bowl of soup or a coffee, while continuing to appreciate the views from the comfort of the indoors.
The Clynelish Distillery
The Clynelish Distillery we know today began production in 1969 but the original was built in 1819. The Taste of Clynelish Tour is a fascinating journey through the process of making whisky and is a great opportunity to learn all about the local history and how this iconic Brora distillery has developed. Not to be missed.
Loch Brora
Loch Brora is a short drive down the single-track road along the river Brora, through thick woodlands. The perfect place for a picnic or a swim. Bring along some kayaks to have fun and reach the manmade island in the middle of the loch. It’s a glorious place – you’ll spot some local deer as well, but do keep your distance.
Big Burn Golspie
Big Burn This is a lovely walk. Follow the river until you reach the fairy tale-like waterfall.
Dunrobin Castle
Dunrobin Castle welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year. Home to the duke of Sutherland, Dunrobin Castle is one of Britain’s oldest continuously inhabited houses, dating all the way back to the 1300s. During WW1 the castle was used as a naval hospital and between 1965 and 1972 it was a boy’s boarding school. The castle is a fantastic day out. Be sure to venture down into the immaculately manicured lawns and don’t miss the birds of prey demonstration.
Dornoch Cathedral
Dornoch Cathedral is an architectural masterpiece. The original Cathedral was burned down during a feud between the Murray’s of Dornoch and the Mackay’s of Strathnaver and rebuilt built between 1835 and 1837. There are so many details to absorb in this gorgeous building, you must give it plenty of time to explore.
Glen Loth
Glen Loth is famously one of the most beautiful drives or hikes in Scotland. Join Glen Loth at the A9 close to the settlement of Loth and guide your way through to the Strath Kildonan
Kildonan Strath
Kildonan Strath is another glorious drive or (very long) walk. To go the full length, begin at the entrance in Helmsdale village anytime from dawn till dusk. Follow the Helmsdale River, pause to visit Kildonan Church on your left and a little while after that, on your right is Baile An Or.
Kildonan Burn
Kildonan Burn has before and since the 1869 Kildonan Gold Rush, mysteriously generated flakes, and still even nuggets of gold. It remains possible with permission, to try your hand at gold panning at Balle An Or (Place of Gold). On a lovely sunny day, it’s a wonderful way to while away the hours.
Ben Bhraggie
Ben Bhraggie If you’re up for a hike, head for Ben Bhraggie. It is a stunning backdrop for the village of Golspie and provides an incredible view across the whole of Sutherland. Sitting at the top is a statue of the Duke of Sutherland – notoriously responsible of the Kildonan Highland Clearances which saw hundreds of locals evicted from their land to be replaced by sheep. This deemed to be a more profitable 18th century alternative to tenants’ rents. The statue invites some controversy but for many it serves as a reminder of the history, so it remains. It is also a familiar landmark – and a welcome home symbol for those returning to Sutherland.
